How to Maintain Your Vinyl Windows

One of the many benefits of vinyl windows is that they require minimal maintenance. If you have vinyl windows or are considering a window replacement, it’s essential to understand the upkeep required. Follow these tips to help prolong the life of your windows and keep your window warranty in effect.

1. Cleaning Products to Avoid

Concentrated cleaners may cause damage to the glass and window frame. Therefore, avoid cleaners that contain abrasive particles, solvents, or paint remover. Additionally, while using a pressure washer on the exterior may be tempting, it may do more harm than good. Instead, roll up your sleeves and use good old fashioned elbow grease.

2. How to Clean the Exterior Frame

Although rain will often keep the exterior free of dust and dirt, you should clean the window frame annually. Gently hose down the frame, then use a microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush to wash the vinyl with mild soap or diluted detergent solution. Rinse the frame thoroughly with water to remove any soap residue and wipe dry.

3. How to Clean the Glass

If you live in a multi-story home, start with the top-floor windows. Use light circular motions to clean the window panes with mild dish soap and water. Rinse off the soap entirely with water and wipe the surface dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaks and water spots. Inside the home, use a commercial-grade glass cleaner and paper towel to clean the glass.

4. How to Clean Sash Tracks

Sash tracks help keep your windows airtight and drain water away from your house. Debris, dirt and foliage can end up in the sash track over time. Clean your sash tracks regularly to help prevent buildup that can wear out window hinges, rollers, weatherstripping, and locks prematurely. Vacuum any dirt from the windowsill and track areas. Clean the sash track with a mild soap or diluted detergent solution. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe dry.

5. How to Clean Window Screens

Carefully remove the screen from the window and lay it flat on a clean surface to prevent damage. Use a soft-bristled brush to wash the screens with mild soap and water. As always, rinse with water, wipe dry, and then reinstall the clean screen.
